Students who enroll in this
course will receive intensive instruction in advanced journalism skills
in writing, editing, design and desktop publishing that are necessary to
make the transition from junior high to high school publications. Additionally,
they will assist in producing material by writing stories or designing
pages for publication in the student newspaper.
Photojournalism

Students who enroll shoot,
develop and print black and white photographs as a photojournalist rather
than a fine arts photographer. Individuals who enroll must have the use
an adjustable 35mm camera and realize that they will be responsible for
the additional expense of purchasing film and/or photographic paper. Students
interested in serving as photographers for the school yearbook, newspaper,
news bureau or magazine staffs are encouraged to enroll.

Students who enroll in this
course will receive intensive instruction in advanced journalism skills
in yearbook copy writing, editing, designing and using computers that are
necessary to make the transition from junior high to high school publications.
Additionally, they will assist in producing material for publication in
the yearbook or magazine such as writing copy and designing pages.
Telecommunications Today

Radio and television reach
into every household in America. This workshop course will survey the functions,
operations, responsibilities and influences of the various mass media with
major emphasis on telecommunications. The history, regulation and effects
of radio and television and related media in the United States will be
covered. The course will also introduce the student to the basic fundamentals
of on-air performance, advertising, news, production and promotion in the
telecommunication industry today with the dual purpose of developing media
literacy in the students and preparing them for work as staff members on
WHJE or CHTV. NOTE: This course is the prerequisite for the upper level
radio/TV courses in the communications department and participation on
the high school radio and TV stations, WHJE and CHTV.

and various projects using desktop publishing, thereby applying advanced

This is a course for students
interested in learning all facets of magazine production as they write,
edit and design the school magazine. It includes classroom instruction
and laboratory experience in magazine design, layout, writing, production
and editing. There will be extensive use of the Macintosh computer in production
of a student-generated journalistic magazine. Editors will be selected
from the class roster. May be repeated for up to six semesters of credit.

This course is designed to
give the students more intensive practice on fundamentals through daily
participation on radio station WHJE. All students will be able to share
in the responsibility of staffing WHJE both during class and at times when
school is not in session. Primary emphasis will be on news, production
and on-air performance.
Radio Management 1-2

This course is designed to
introduce third-year radio students to the business of broadcasting and
management techniques and responsibilities within that business. Information
will be introduced through textbook, lecture, guest presentations and field
trips. Students will be given textbook information on six major areas of
broadcast management and area commercial station department managers will
be brought in to supplement the textbook information. The first semester
of the course will emphasize management techniques and theories, leadership
development, and station organization. The second semester students will
manage a commercial radio station that will air on cable television Channel
21.
Television Lab 1-2

Students will have the opportunity
to improve TV skills while working on the Carmel High School cable TV station
staff. The course provides a strong emphasis on everyday production and
direction for CHTV. Programs produced for instructional use as well as
programming for the cable channel are a part of the responsibilities in
this class. After-school sessions will be required of students enrolled
in the class.
Cable TV Management &
Operations 1-2

Prerequisite: TV Lab 1-2

The course will allow students
to explore the management positions available in television through textbook
and daily operational assignments at CHTV. Students will also be given
independent production projects that will air on CHTV. After-school hours
will be required at times.

Through this course, students
go to a job site daily. At the job site, the student is expected to fulfill
the assignments given by the sponsoring media organization and make timely
reports to the Carmel High School faculty sponsor. The student is expected
to work at the job site at least fifteen hours per week.
Advanced Radio/TV Production

Prerequisite: Radio Management
2 or TV Management 2; GPA of 2.5 or higher

This course is designed to
give students an opportunity to produce projects that are more intricate
in design for both WHJE and CHTV. Students use the most sophisticated production
equipment available to create the projects. The faculty adviser makes assignments
after discussion with the student.
