What is AVID?

  • Stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination
  • National program for grades 6-12
  • College prep, NOT remedial or a study hall
  • An elective class, taught by Jen Williams and Brooke Weekes


Who are our AVID students?
  • academically in the middle with the potential to achieve at a higher level
  • working towards a Core 40 or Honors diploma
  • challenged to take rigorous courses
  • motivated to be successful


What do they do in the AVID class?
  • Learn how to take notes in a proven format, Cornell notetaking
  • Learn how to keep an organized binder of all their classes
  • Learn time management, self-advocacy, and interpersonal skills
  • Increase writing skills through timed writing assignments
  • Are held accountable for all of these things by the grade that they earn


What do they do in their other classes?
  • Take notes on Cornell note paper
  • Use a large binder
  • Ask questions; are involved in classes
  • Take advantage of extra opportunities to learn, such as SRT and study sessions
